Will Car Wraps Hide Damage?

Over the years, your car will inevitably take some damage. Perhaps a neighboring car scratched or dented your door with theirs. Or maybe some nasty hail left your vehicle with dents all over. If this sounds like you, you might be wondering what you can do about it. You might have wondered: will car wraps hide damage? That’s what we’d like to address today.

Will Car Wraps Hide Damage?

Can car wraps hide damage on your vehicle?

Will the Wrap Cover Scratches or Dents?

Let’s start with the short answer: yes, a vinyl wrap will technically cover any scratches or dents on your car. But it will not hide them. In fact, it may even make them more noticeable.

You must know this before you invest in a wrap. No matter how tiny the dent or scratch is, it will almost certainly be noticeable under the vinyl. Even if you are just dealing with a scratch to the paint, the wrap won’t help. This is because wraps are specifically designed to contour to every last groove of the vehicle.

Technically, you could wrap your vehicle even if it’s covered in scratches or dents—if the aesthetics don’t matter too much for you. But if you, like most people who purchase car wraps, care about how it looks, you’re going to be disappointed and up getting a replacement before long. For this reason, we always recommend repairing any damage to your vehicle before bringing it in.

Wraps Might Not Hide, but They Do Protect

Now that we’ve covered why vinyl wraps do not hide damage, let’s move onto the good news: they can protect your car once applied. This is not to say that the material is impervious to dents and scratches. But it does add an extra layer of protection to the coat of paint on your vehicle.

Having a coat of paint on your vehicle can be burdensome in that paint requires nearly constant maintenance. To get the best lifespan out of your paint, you should wash your car as much as once per week. Not many people have time for that.

Vehicle wraps require maintenance too, but it is not nearly so taxing to maintain as paint. All you need to do is occasionally wipe down your wrapped vehicle with a soft cloth, soap, and water.

In this way, your wrap can last for as long as ten years. And all the while, it will be protecting the coat of paint underneath.
